JROTC Rankings

The 2025-26 Florida JROTC Orienteering season is underway, and so are the individual rankings calculations. Started in 2013-14, the Rankings are designed to recognize and rank the achievements of every Florida JROTC Orienteering participant in every event from the beginning of the season to the end. “Medals go to the top three, sometimes five participants, we all know that,” said Rankings coordinator, Gord Hunter, “but what about the rest? We needed a way to give recognition to those who were coming to events, trying hard, and making improvements.”

With the Rankings system, the top orienteers are still at the top, but we can bring forward and recognize those making great effort and great improvement, and who are there to help their team. How do the Rankings work? For each race, points are awarded according to how cadets finish in their class. Most events: 40 points for first, 37 for second, 35, 33, then reducing by 1 point for each higher placing, down to a minimum of 6 points for each successful finisher.

Some events count as regional championships. Their point totals are increased by 25% (rounded off) across the board. The State Championships earn a 50% bonus for each successful finisher. Smaller, non-open events can also earn points. Each cadet’s top five event totals across the year count for their Ranking placement.

Watch for updated rankings to be posted early in the week following each event. Team Rankings will be updated at the end of each month, and roll over from year to year, with the points earned in a month a year ago dropping off and being replaced by points earned the same month a year later. The top five scores in the year are counted. One point for having at least one person in a class at an event, one more point for each team they finish ahead of, and bonus points to the top three teams in each class.
